Feedbacks on Rule of 10

Here is the summary of feedbacks that I got. I asked Gemini to compile all the comments and my responses. 

THE RULE OF 10 : 16 REALITY CHECKS FOR MALAYSIAN HIGHWAYS

​1. The Lane Hogger Myth

The Claim: Keeping a 10-car gap in the fast lane makes you a hogger.

The Reality: Speed is not the same as Gap. If you are doing 110km/h with a 45m gap, you are moving at the maximum legal flow. The gap is for survival, not for slowing down. And it is not a lane hogging if your speed is the same as car infront. Anyway, use right lane only for overtaking. 

​2. The Jam Maker Fallacy

The Claim: All that empty space causes more traffic jams.

The Reality: Gaps actually delete jams. Jams are caused by "Braking Waves." Tailgating forces instant braking that ripples back for kilometers. A 45m (for 100km/h) gap acts as a Shock Absorber, letting traffic flow constantly.

​3. The Move Left Mandate

The Claim: Safe distance is no excuse for blocking the lane.

The Reality: Agree 100%. The Rule of 10 is a safety tool, not a "Right to the Lane." If someone tailgates your gap, move left. It is safer to have a speeder in front of you than a hazard on your bumper.

4. The Sifu Scanner Defense

The Claim: I look 5 cars ahead, so I don't need a big gap.

The Reality: Information is not Space. Scanning gives you an early warning, but if the car directly in front stops instantly, only the physical buffer of the Rule of 10 will save you from a collision.

5. The Lamp Post Reliance

The Claim: I just use 1 lamp post distance (50m) as my marker.

The Reality: Static markers fail. Lamp posts aren't everywhere, especially on dark rural roads or the Karak Highway at night. Your car is a "Portable Ruler" that works in total darkness.

6. The Brembo Brakes Argument

The Claim: I have high-performance brakes; I can stop instantly.

The Reality: Brakes don't stop time. You still travel about 30m during your reaction phase before the brakes even engage. Plus, the gap protects your rear bumper from the car behind you.

7. The Kaki Potong Realist

The Claim: If I leave a gap, someone will definitely cut in!

The Reality: The 0.1s Trade-off. Letting someone merge costs you only 0.1 seconds of time. It is better to have a "hazard" in front of you than a "tailgater" behind you. Just lift your foot for 2 seconds to reset the gap.

8. The 3-Second Traditionalist

The Claim: The 3-second rule is the only way.

The Reality: 3 seconds is the gold standard (~83m), but some humans are bad at counting time while moving. The Rule of 10 is a Visual Check, which is more intuitive and faster for the brain to process. It is an alternative. As long as you have some rules to follow, it is fine.

​9. The Road Capacity Critic

The Claim: If everyone followed this, the highway would be twice as long!

The Reality: Laminar Flow Theory. Like water in a pipe, space prevents turbulence. You move more cars per hour through a point with steady gaps than with bumper-to-bumper crawling.

10. The Perfect Driver Paradox

The Claim: I'm an expert driver with perfect reflexes; I don't need a buffer.

The Reality: You can't control "System Failure." Even a pro can't react to a blown tire or a ladder falling off a lorry 5 meters away. Real pros build a buffer for the unpredictable.

11. The Biological Bottleneck

The Claim: I'm always ready to act instantly.

The Reality: Your brain has "latency." At 110km/h, you travel 30.5 meters per second. It takes about 1.25s to perceive a hazard and move your foot. You've covered 38 meters before your brakes even touch the disc

​12. The AI Slop Defense

The Claim: This is just generic AI advice.

The Reality: Data is the Antidote. This isn't a chatbot hallucination; it's GIS Engineering based on Malaysian road geometry and kinematic equations. Check the simulator at zoomyd.xyz to see the math. Anyway, you are always free to try any prompt to get AI to come up with safety follow distance rule. 

13.The Advert Accusation

The Claim: Is this a hidden ad for insurance or dashcams?

The Reality: Pure Public Service. There is no "Buy Now" button. As a dev, I build tools to solve real problems using spatial logic. The profit is a safer highway for all of us.

14. The Clickbait Cynic

The Claim: He just wants you to click his link to earn ad revenue.

The Reality: Hosting web scripts for a niche simulator and safety distance calculator actually costs me money. Anyway, the post is already self explanatory. In addition, to visit my page at zoomyd.xyz is optional

15. The Measuring Tape Sarcasm

The Claim: Do I need to get out of the car to measure the distance?

The Reality: Spatial Intelligence. You don't need a ruler to park a car or play sports. The car in front is your "Scale Bar." You are free to agak2 the distance as you do to pass a narrow road or keeping your car at the center between the left and right lane markers. 

16. The "Look Ahead" Fallacy

The Claim: If I follow the Rule of 10, I'll still brake when the 5th car in front brakes, so it still causes a jam.

The Reality: With a 10-car gap, you don't need to "slam" your brakes when you see a ripple ahead. You can simply lift your foot off the gas. The 45m gap "swallows" the speed difference so the person behind you never has to touch their brakes. The jam ends with you.

Rule of 10 : Tips for safe following Distance

Stay Safe on The Roads – Keep a Safe Distance!

Rear-end (bumper-to-bumper) accidents especially in Malaysia are far too common—and many of them actually could be avoided.

I’d like to share a simple method or tips (in Malaysia it is called 'petua' ) I came up with to help drivers maintain a safer following distance.

Match your speed with the number of car lengths:
- 100 km/h → 10 car lengths
- 90 km/h → 9 car lengths
- 80 km/h → 8 car lengths
- 70 km/h → 7 car lengths
- 60 km/h → 6 car lengths
- 50 km/h → 5 car lengths
- 40 km/h → 4 car lengths
- 30 km/h → 3 car lengths
- 20 km/h → 2 car lengths
- 10 km/h or less → 1 car length

It’s simple, easy to remember, and practical for everyday driving.

You can also use the 3-second rule (count “1001, 1002, 1003”) if you prefer.

Some may say this is too cautious, call it lane hogging, or judge your driving. That doesn’t matter.

Your safety, your passengers, and your vehicle should always come first.

I hope this simple idea helps make our roads safer for everyone.

3 Features That I like the Most on Petal Maps

I’ve been using Petal Maps for the past two years, and honestly, I loved it since day one. Let me share the three features I find most useful as a traveller, and why they make such a difference for me.

1. Integration with Public Transport

Most people think Petal Maps is just like Google Maps or Waze which is mainly for drivers. But I’ve discovered it is so much more than that, and I’m glad it is fully supported here in Malaysia.

Since I drive and also use public transport, I really appreciate how Petal Maps shows nearby MRT, LRT and even KTMB stations directly on the map. It doesn’t stop there, it also lists the service provider, the routes, and even the walking distance. That’s been a lifesaver whenever I’m deciding whether to walk or wait for the next train.

There are many days I’d rather leave the car at home to avoid traffic jams, parking stress, or fuel costs. On those days, I just switch to Petal Maps's public transport mode, enter my destination, and instantly get multiple route options with travel times, station details, and walking paths. I can even set my departure time in advance, which helps me plan my day better.

At this point, Petal Maps feels less like “just another navigation app” and more like a reliable travel companion that makes city commuting much easier.

2. Smart Alerts for RSA Information

Ever been on a highway and suddenly needed a stop? I’ve had those moments, and Petal Maps really comes through. On the main screen, it shows the nearest Rest & Service Area (RSA), complete with details like availability of petrol stations, toilet, parking and food options.

What I love most is how automatic it is. No typing, no searching, no fuss, the information just remains on the screen, even with live updates about the next stop. Perfect for deciding when to stretch my legs, grab some snacks, or refuel.

And if the voice assistant is on, it announces the information in advance, so I don’t even need to look at the screen. For now, it only works on highways (not regular roads yet), but it already makes road trips smoother and less stressful. As a driver, I get to stay focused on the road while Petal Maps handles the details.

3. Dynamic Traffic Bar

This might sound small, but the traffic bar has become one of my favourite features. At a glance, I can see if my route is clear, slightly slow or jammed up.

Of course other navigational apps show traffic conditions on the map, but Petal Maps’s traffic bar gives the whole journey’s traffic situation in a simple line. It saves me the stress of guessing what’s ahead. If I see heavy traffic before I even leave, I can choose to wait it out or pick another route.

I also like how it can tell where the jam is happening. If it’s near my destination, I usually know a few alternative roads I can switch to. If it’s in the middle of the journey, I might avoid that stretch altogether. This feature alone has saved me a lot of wasted time (and frustration).

There are more features I could talk about, but these three really stand out for me. Overall, I’m very satisfied with Petal Maps as a tool that makes my travelling easier, more confident, and more convenient. I’m already at Level 50 with 20 badges so far, and I really admire how Petal Maps appreciates its users thru these incentive and fun rewards.

Lokasi: Berhampiran Sungai Semantan, Temerloh, Pahang

Keluasan: 10 ekar

1. Ringkasan Eksekutif

Semantan Outdoor Training Centre dicadangkan sebagai sebuah pusat latihan luar yang bersifat komersial untuk pelbagai aktiviti fizikal, motivasi dan pembangunan sahsiah. Terletak 500 meter dari Sungai Semantan dan 6 km dari Plaza Tol Temerloh, lokasi ini strategik untuk menarik pelajar, agensi kerajaan, syarikat korporat dan NGO.
Tambahan kepada kawasan utama, satu kawasan khas seluas 1 ekar yang terletak betul-betul di tepi sungai turut dikenalpasti dan dimasukkan sebagai sebahagian daripada projek ini. Kawasan ini akan digunakan sepenuhnya untuk aktiviti air yang akan memberi nilai tambah dari aspek pembelajaran, pelancongan, dan pemuliharaan sungai.

2. Latar Belakang & Objektif

Cadangan projek ini bertujuan untuk menyediakan kemudahan latihan luar yang berstruktur dan selamat, dalam suasana semula jadi yang sesuai untuk pembangunan kendiri dan berkumpulan. Objektif utama ialah:

• Menyokong pembangunan sahsiah dan kepimpinan
• Menjadi tarikan aktiviti eko-pelancongan dan latihan korporat

 Ulasan Awal Petal Maps 

Saya mula menyukai aplikasi Petal Maps berbanding Waze atau Google Maps sebagai bantuan navigasi waktu pemanduan di jalanraya.

Seperti juga Waze, Petal Maps bergantung kepada pengguna untuk menyalurkan maklumat insiden dan trafik, atau lebih dikenali sebagai konsep crowd sourcing. Setakat ini sebanyak 100 juta unit telah dimuat turun melalui Google Play Store. Jadi, semakin ramai orang menggunakannya, akan lebih berkualiti info2 yg boleh ditawarkan oleh Petal Maps. 

Antara ciri2 kelainan Petal Maps berbanding Waze mahupun Google antaranya ialah :

- paparan animasi 3D bantuan lorong. Paparan khas ini akan pop-up bila anda tiba di persimpangan yg agak kompleks. Bantuan ini memudahkan anda utk berada di lorong yg betul sebelum memasuki persimpangan. 

- paparan imej cuaca spt hujan, mendung dsbnya. Laporan ramalan cuaca di PM agak extensive - buka saja app PM, animasi ramalan cuaca di lokasi akan keluar dalam beberapa saat. PM juga ada menu khas ramalan cuaca setiap jam untuk 1 bulan. Ia mengandungi keadaan cuaca spt hujan, cerah dsbnya dan juga suhu. PM juga akan memberi notifikasi keadaan cuaca. 

- berapa bilangan lampu trafik yg akan ditempuhi. Selain lokasi lampu trafik, bilanganya di sepanjang laluan juga akan ditunjukkan. Ini bukan saja memberi idea utk anda mencari route alternatif sekiranya tak suka lampu trafik tapi juga mengira penambahan masa dalam perjalanan. 

- Paparan info tempat2 penting iaitu POI - point of interest. Ianya seperti hentian sebelah atau kawasan rawat & rehat di lebuhraya dan juga pondok tol dgn bayarannya sekali. Terowong juga akan ditunjukkan sekiranya anda akan melaluinya. 

- harga tol sewaktu paparan pilihan route. Jadi anda boleh pilih route mana yg lebih rendah kosnya. Ini secara tak langsung membantu anda utk beringat top-up TnG atau bersedia dgn kad debit/kredit. 

- pilihan jalan samada bawah atau atas. Ini berguna jika kita di lebuhraya yg bertingkat2 atau pun di jalan yg ada flyover. 

- laporan perjalanan mingguan anda dgn maklumat spt jarak dan masa perjalanan. Ada perbandingan dgn minggu sebelumnya. Ia bukan saja utk kereta tapi juga utk pejalan kaki dan penunggang basikal. Analisa ini mungkin berguna utk membuat kiraan atau bajet kos minyak dan tol.

- laporan semasa spt kemalangan, polis, kesesakan, gangguan jalan dsbnya. Ini hampir sama dgn Waze manakala Google Maps tiada utiliti spt ini. Walau bagaimana pun info adalah bergantung kpd sumbangan pengguna lain. Pastinya lokasi kamera had laju dan lampu merah juga diberikan. 

- paparan had laju jalan dan kelajuan kenderaan anda. Ini ada di semua app termasuklah PM. 

- paparan 3D yg realistik dlm format 4K di mana bangunan2 yang popular spt Menara Berkembar Petronas ditunjukkan dalam 3D. Untuk mod gelap atau hari malam, lampu bangunan dan lampu jalan juga akan menyala. Sangat menarik utk dilihat grafik yg macam realistik ini. Anda boleh memilih utk paparan 2D atau 3D.

- penunjuk arah kiblat yg terbina dalam merupakan satu utiliti yang amat berguna utk orang Islam bukan sahaja sewaktu perjalanan atau tidak. Anda tak perlu menginstall app lain2. 

- pengukur jarak dan luas kawasan adalah satu lagi utiliti tambahan yang boleh digunakan samada utk ukur jarak jalan ataupun luas sesuatu kawasan. Walaupun ia agak luar biasa utk App navigasi, utiliti seperti ini amat berguna dalam keadaan tertentu. 

- bantuan suara pemanduan yang bukan sahaja memberi panduan jelas spt bila nak tukar lorong atau apa yg ada di hadapan tapi juga amat prihatin dgn keselamatan. Ia akan mengingatkan anda utk berhati2 dgn kenderaan yg keluar dari simpang. Ada banyak bahasa yg anda boleh pilih ikut kesukaan. 

- Ada beberapa info ringkas yang berguna spt:

-- masa perjalanan ke rumah atau pejabat dari lokasi anda. PM akan berikan jangkaan masa perjalanan walaupun anda tidak mengaktifkan mod pemanduan.

-- harga anggaran Grab utk ke lokasi yg dicari 

-- maklumat dan review tempat makan, hotel yg popular di sekitar anda 

-- peta status trafik semasa 

-- lokasi stesen minyak berhampiran dgn harga minyak terkini 

-- lokasi EV Charger, tandas awam, restoran, bengkel berhampiran

-- perkongsian lokasi semasa dgn pengguna aplikasi lain 

-- laporan penggunaan mingguan 

-- meletak shortcut di home screen phone utk destinasi rumah dan pejabat 

Dan satu lagi yg hebat pada PM ialah utiliti perjalanan konvoi atau Team Map. Saya tak berpeluang utk ulas kerana belum guna. Tapi apa yg saya faham ialah sekiranya anda berkonvoi, semua ahli kumpulan boleh buat satu team dalam PM dan akan mendapat kemaskini lokasi secara real time. 

Selain untuk pemanduan, PM juga boleh digunakan untuk pejalan kaki dan penunggang basikal. PM akan mengira jumlah kalori yg dibakar apabila anda berjalan. 

Selain pada phone, PM juga boleh diinstall di Android Player kenderaan dan jam pintar. Dan anda boleh menggunakan satu akaun yg sama utk ketiga2 peranti serta membuka secara serentak. 

Peta yg digunakan oleh PM adalah daripada TomTom. Sebarang pembetulan atau penambahan kpd peta mungkin akan ambil sedikit masa berbanding Waze. Dalam hal ini, Waze menawarkan peta yg dikemaskini dgn pantas, mungkin tak sampai satu hari dah ada kemaskini. 

PM ada utiliti utk anda memberi feedback terhadap peta mereka spt lokasi yg salah, tak wujud dan sbgnya. Apa2 masalah PM juga boleh ditanya atau disalurkan melalui FB khas utk kawasan South East Asia. Setakat ini saya dapati respon mereka adalah cepat. 

Bagi pengguna phone Huawei model tertentu, PM juga menawarkan beberapa utiliti tambahan. Malangnya saya tak pakai phone Huawei jadi tak pasti utiliti2 tersebut. Mungkin mereka yg ada pengalaman boleh share. 

App PM ini boleh didownload di Google Play Store, Apple Apps Store dan semestinya Huawei Apps Gallery. Versi terkini selalunya lebih cepat akan ada di Huawei Apps. Adalah penting untuk anda update atau kemaskini app PM melalui menu yg disediakan dalam app bukannya melalui Google Play. Versi untuk Android adalah lebih terkini berbanding IOS. 

Buat masa ini PM tidak menyokong Android Auto atau Car Play.
